Ⅲ Teaching procedures

Step 1: Warming up

Show some adverbial clause on the screen, let Ss look at these sentences carefully and find the similarities among them. After observation, do a conclusion together: “ they all describe the verbs like adverbs.”

I will call you as soon as I arrive in Beijing.

Where you work, you should work hard.

My friends like me because I’m honesty.

Step 2: Presentation

1. Teacher read the passage for the first time, find the key word and the main content of this passage. Let underline the answers in the text and invite two tell them:

① What will happen if users share needles with others?

② How can users become addicted to crack cocaine much more easily?

2. Invite two Ss to write down these two sentences on the blackboard. Simplify these two sentences to highlight the if-clause.

Users who inject the drug are in more danger if they share needles with other users.

Users become addicted to crack cocaine much easily if they smoke it.

3. Let them observe these two sentences, find the common between them. Tell them the function and meaning of if-clause. Invite two Ss to try translate these two sentences.

Step 3: Practice

1. Give them several minutes to make their own sentences using if-clause

2. Read the passage again try answer the following questions:

Q: which one is more dangerous inject it or smoke it? Why?

Q: what do you think the author’s behavior?

Step 4: Production

Show them another passage, let them try to underline if-clause in this passage, then translate the meaning.

Step 5: Summary & Homework

1. Ask Ss to summarize the usage and function of if-clause.

2. Ask class, please search more information about if-clause

Cocaine is a powerfully addictive drug. Some drug users inject cocaine, others smoke it. Both ways are dangerous. Users who inject the drug are also in more danger if they share needles with other users. Crack cocaine is the most addictive form of cocaine. Users become addicted to crack cocaine much more easily if they smoke it. Smoking allows cocaine to reach the brain very quickly. When I went back to the man again, I wanted more crack cocaine. But he asked me for a lot of money. I didn’t have enough money so he didn’t give me any drugs. I was them to the drug dealer. He told me to take them to a shop in a nearby street. The man in the shop gave me some money. I took the money to the drug dealer and he gave me some more crack cocaine. Using cocaine increases the user’s heart rate and blood pressure.
